Beware Yachts in Distress

| 4

Andrew Mwangura, who monitors piracy from his base in Mombasa, is warning shipping to look out for the Carre d'As which was snatched a week ago. He believes its French crew have been put ashore and it is now being used as a mother ship to snare other unwitting sailors. Typically, boats like these are used to lure other ships closer by pretending to be disabled before unleashing a speedboat packed with a boarding party armed with AK-47s and RPGs.

Who in his right mind would steer a boat anywhere near Somalia anymore? I just don't get it.

It's all about economics - that's my take. Losing a ship for a couple of months, spending an extra million dollars to have it freed and having a Filipino crew member killed is still, on balance, more economically viable than sailing around Cape Point. But why you'd do it in a luxury yacht is beyond me...

The website of the International Maritime Bureau has a map showing where all the attacks and attempted attacks occurred, and from that it appears that the yacht was raided very close to the shores of Puntland, rather than in the open seas like most of the others. So maybe the Frenchies were trying to cut down their risk. But if they were sailing from Australia, as I gather they were, why not just go around the Cape?

Puntland is now the problem, surely?

What do you think?
