The My Lai tapes
The BBC is re-broadcasting the two part radio documentary, the My Lai Tapes which tells the story of what happened on that day in 1968 when soldiers from the US Army slaughtered villagers in My Lai,
“The first time the Americans came, the children followed them,” one villager says. “They gave the children sweets, then they smiled and left. The second time, we poured them water to drink. The third time, they killed everyone.”
Then there’s one of the soldiers. “I was personally responsible for killing 20 to 25 people. Cutting their throats, scalping them, cutting out their tongues. I just lost all sense of purpose and direction.” link
It’s an excellent, if harrowing, listen. Photo taken by United States Army|photographer Ronald L. Haeberle on March 16, 1968
