The Unfolding Crisis in Egypt

Talk Friday 16 August 2013, 7:00 PM

With: Ayman Al Sayyad, Editor in Chief of Weghat Nazar; Ahmed Zain, Misr Al Arabi; and Hosam El Sokkari, MeSocial.Me and former head of BBC Arabic and Yahoo! in MENA.

These influential media decision makers from Egypt will be discussing the current crisis, the role of the media and the prospects for peaceful change. The discussion will be chaired by Naomi Sakr from the University of Westminster and author of Transformations in Egyptian Journalism.

Have the events of August 14th pushed Egypt further from democracy? How have the Egyptian and international media covered this week’s events. Are the media helping to foster division or cohesion? Do human rights go out the window when national security is threatened? Is anyone telling the full story? Put your questions to the panel.

MDI works internationally to encourage and facilitate responsible media coverage of diversity. It aims to prevent the media from intentionally or unintentionally spreading prejudice, intolerance and hatred which can lead to social tensions, disputes and violent conflict. MDI encourages instead, fair, accurate, inclusive and sensitive media coverage in order to promote understanding between different groups and cultures.
