Screening: The Sound Man + Q&A

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Chip Duncan, protagonist Abdul Rahman Ramadhan, photojournalist/producer Patrick Muiruri and photojournalist/producer Salim Amin.

The Sound Man tells the story of Abdul Rahman Ramadhan, a 62-year-old professional soundman who has lived in Nairobi’s Kibera slum since he was born. For the past 35 years, Abdul has worked side-by-side with the best photojournalists from Kenya while recording sound for news reports featuring crisis, war, famine and genocide.

Through a series of modules, you will learn how to shoot video with the EOS 7D Mark II, how to deal with sound, lighting and movement. You will look at different styles of shooting, comparing treatment types and discussing the advantages and disadvantages of directed film making against more ‘organic’, ‘run-and-gun’ style filmmaking.

Dirty Truths: Exploring “messy cinema” with the True/False Film Fest

Every year, the True/False Film Festival explores films that cross borders, break the existing rules and push the form forward. This so-called “messy cinema” experiments with re-enactments, highlights complicated filmmaker/protagonist relationships and challenges assumptions about ‘truth’. Join festival co-founder David Wilson, and past True/False filmmakers Sarah Gavron, Kevin Macdonald and Beadie Finzi, as we will thrust our hands in the muck and get a little dirty as we debate the complexities of nonfiction and imagine a messier future.

Preview Screening: Night Will Fall + Q&A

In 1945, a team of top filmmakers came together to make a documentary about the horrific findings in the concentration camps. This film would provide lasting, undeniable evidence of the Nazis’ unspeakable crimes. Despite initial support from the British and US governments, the film was never finished. Night Will Fall chronicles the untold story of the film’s history. This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director André Singer and producer Sally Angel.

WARM Presents: Syria – Snapshots of History in the Making + debate

Founded in 2010 by a group of Syrian filmmakers, Abounaddara anonymously releases weekly films on the web in order to avoid censorship. These short films are a testimony of the fight for freedom in Syria. The film Syria: Snapshots of History in the Making is constructed from these short films and forms an intimate journey into a society on the brink. The screening will be preceded by a discussion with journalist and head of WARM Remy Ourdan , producer of Abounaddara Films Charif Kiwan , photographers Patrick Chauvel and Paul Lowe.
