SOLD OUT: Sunday Screening – Waste Land

Screening March 20, 2011 4:00 PM

Filmed over three years, Waste Land follows celebrated Brazilian artist Vik Muniz from his home in Brooklyn back to Brazil and to the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio de Janeiro.

Muniz photographs a group of “catadores”, garbage pickers of recyclable materials. The journey was iniaitally to paint the catadores using garbage, however during his collaboration the characters have a huge effect on Muniz and a new project is born.

Along with Muniz the catadores create huge images of themselves with the garbage they collect to reveal a moving story that has parallels of dignity and despair.

Lucy Walker’s multi-award winning Waste Land is a story of the transformative power of art and strength andf resiliance of the human spirit.
