Screening: Haiti – Where Did the Money Go?

Screening July 2, 2012 7:00 PM

This screening will be followed by a Q&A with director Michele Mitchell.

In the immediate aftermath of the catastrophic earthquake in Haiti in early 2010, the international community pledged a record amount of aid to help rebuild the country. Ten months after the earthquake director Michele Mitchell travels to Haiti with a seemingly simple question: “where did this money go?”

Mitchell talks to internally displaced camp residents about their living conditions, interviews NGO spokespeople, aid workers, academics and human rights advocates to try and track down the aid money. He discovers that despite the best intentions of the many NGO’s working in Haiti, a high percentage of the relief effort money donated is not getting through to the very people it was intended to help on the ground in Port-au-Prince.

The film also raises broader questions about aid and its effectiveness after natural disasters or war and asks if there is a better way.
