Sunday Screening – The Bang Bang Club
The Bang Bang Club tells the story of four photographers working in the townships of South Africa during the final years of Apartheid.
Kevin Carter, Greg Marinovich, Ken Oosterbroek, and João Silva, the photojournalists associated with the name, were at their height between 1990 when Nelson Mandela was released from jail to the 1994 elections.
The film is an adaptation of the auto-biographical book The Bang-Bang Club: Snapshots from a Hidden War co-written by Greg Marinovich and João Silva. With impressive performances from Ryan Phillippe and Malin Akerman, it tells the remarkable and sometimes harrowing story of the extremes the four men went to in order to capture their pictures in a crucial period of South Africa’s history.
