Feliks Topolski Centenary Celebrations – the Changing Ways of Depicting Conflict

How has modern technology changed our perception of wars and conflict? Are war artists and chronicles now a thing of the past?

To celebrate the centenary of Polish-born British war artist and chronicler Feliks Topolski, and to launch an exhibition of his art at the Frontline Club, we discuss the changing ways of depicting wars and conflicts from drawings to photography, from broadcast to video blogging.

John Keane – British war and conflict artist, who in 1991 was appointed official British artist during the Gulf war. His subjects have ranged from Northern Ireland to Nicaragua, and from the British coal industry to the mass media.

Vaughan Smith – Founder of Frontline Television News and Frontline Club. Vaughan spent three weeks in Afghanistan this summer, video-blogging from Helmand province.

Roger Tolson – Head of Pictures at the Imperial War Museum

Roger Tooth – Picture editor of The Guardian.

Moderated by Charles Glass -freelance writer and broadcaster. He is the author of Tribes with Flags, Money for Old Rope, The Tribes Triumphant and The Northern Front. Glass made a documentary for the BBC on the history of war photography from the Crimea to the First Gulf War.
