Screening: Statement 710399

Statement 710399 shows Bosnia 11 years after the end of the 1992-1995 war, where the perpetrators enjoy impunity and privileged positions while the victims struggle to come to terms with their experiences.

The filmmaker follows a father trying to retrace the last days of his teenaged son who disappeared during their attempt to escape the genocide at Srebrenica. The title refers to a statement given by his son to Bosnian Serb police, which came to light during investigations for a War Crimes Tribunal prosecution, and proves he was alive a week after the massacre.

Refic Hodzic was born in Prijedor, Bosnia-Herzegovina. Following a career in journalism he joined the United Nations in 1998 as spokesperson for missions in Bosnia and East Timor before joining the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) as Outreach Coordinator for Bosnia-Herzegovina. In 2005 he joined the War Crimes Chamber of the Court of Bosnia-Herzegovina as head of Public Information and Outreach. He is a founder of XY Films, a Sarajevo based production company specializing in films on war crimes committed during the conflicts in the former Yugoslavia.
