In his new book David Aaronovitch deconstructs conspiracy theories - from Pearl Harbour to the assassination of Kennedy, the death of Diana and 9/11 - providing not only to provide ammunition against bizarre claims about moon landings and twin towers but also revealing the patterns they share.
The Times columnist will also discuss what he discovered about why people fall for conspiracy theories.

David, Couldn't make it as conflicted with 'Pig Business' at the Barbican. I wanted to ask you about one theory that does seem to stack up - it is Putin's KGB bombing the Moscow tower blocks, then Putin blaming it on the Chechens thus getting to electoral power. Everyone likes a bogeyman, the Chechens were made it.
Please put me at ease about this. Is it just that I like having as my bogeyman Putin? Did the KGB do this? There is strong evidence to suggest they did - and no-one has laughed this one off with proof, yet, that i am aware of. The Chechens (unlike UBL's Al Qaeda after 9-11) never claimed it.
Litvinenko (ex-KGB man) believed this and had evidence. I could go on. You know the score. Please.

Many believe this conspiracy theory, but that doesnt make it right, of course. But interestingly, the Chechens never claimed it (unlike UBL's Al Qaeda afer 9-11), but just got demolished for it. Please dispute this (and I am not trying to open the gates!)
